National
Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW), October 16 - 22, has begun.
The Century Council fights the issue of binge drinking year-round, but
we have a few special announcements in recognition of this week.
A BIG Man to Fight a BIG Problem
Fresh off the press today:
Shaquille O'Neal (Shaq) and The Century Council are partnering to fight
binge drinking
on college campuses! We are bringing Shaq back to school to work
alongside college students to produce student-created videos that
address the serious issue of binge drinking on campus. The effort
officially launches with new messages from Shaq each day during National
Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week on our website, and will continue
throughout 2014.
Shaq will continue the momentum generated by our sponsorship of the
National Student Advertising Competition
(NSAC) in 2009. NSAC revealed hundreds of student-generated campaigns
targeting their peers with the goal of shedding new light on the old
problem of binge drinking, bringing new information into the discussion,
and helping students find their own voice on the issue. We have
provided grants to six colleges and universities to implement the
campaigns they generated on their individual campuses.

Higher Education Community Members Guest Blog on Binge Drinking
We'll also be sharing a series of thought-provoking
blogs - one each day this week - from leaders in the higher education community. From insights on the recently published book Getting Wasted to
the role of by-stander interventions, these featured blogs will tackle
multiple binge drinking related topics as they relate to college
students. We invite you to review them each day and join the
conversation in our blog comments.
The Facts on Binge Drinking:
Two
out of three college students drink alcohol and 42% report binge
drinking in the past few weeks. According to the 2010 Monitoring the
Future Study, 13% of college students report having 10+ drinks in a row
at least once in the past two weeks and this is happening significantly
more often among male college students as compared to their female peers
(24% and 7%, respectively). While alcohol consumption among college
students has remained relatively unchanged over the past decade, there
is still work to be done to address the issue.
We hope you'll join us in our efforts to recognize National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week.
